Review Time: Audio-Technica AT-LP120 Turntable
So my journey into the world of vinyl started off with the Audio-Technica AT-LP 60, and now it’s gotten to the point where I’m really into it, so I figured it was time for an upgrade. Not that I thought the AT-LP 60 was bad, I just assumed that I wasn’t getting the best sound possible, so that’s when I started to shop around online. Of course I looked into stuff from Pro-Ject, U Turn, etc. but most of those seemed unreasonably priced, and I’d still have to get an amp to go between the turntable and receiver (and mine doesn’t even have a phono input).
Now, after doing a lot of reading I see that audiophiles generally aren’t hyped about this record player because of the built-in phono amp. At the end of the day, I’m not a snob about it, I just want to enjoy awesome, quality music from my speakers.
From a construction point of view, this is definitely a step-up from my old model. It’s much heavier than my last one, but that’s mainly due to the weights that are attached on the inside. Even though it’s all plastic on the outside, all the switches and controls feel really high quality. The cover that opens on a hinge is moves easily, feels solid, and stays in the open position with no fuss. There are a ton of features that I probably never get to use because I’m not a DJ. However, the pop-up is a life saver because I’m tired of having to turn on an extra light just to position the stylus.
I ended up shelling out some extra bucks to get the black version, so that it all matches with the rest of my equipment. The only thing that I might upgrade in the future is a for a high-quality cartridge/stylus. Apparently I got lucky because this model turntable used to come with a worse cart, but I got one that was made later and came with the A-T AT 95E.
Overall, very happy with the upgrade. It’s also worth noting that Audio-Technica has amazing customer service, because with my old turntable the cover got damaged while moving once. I sent them an email and got a reply within a day. Surprisingly the replacement part was really cheap, and was shipped to me in just three days.
